Planes narrowly avert runway crash

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- In the eighth near miss this year at Los Angeles International Airport, two planes came within 100 feet of each other in a runway mix-up, a report says.

A SkyWest regional jet, with 39 people on board bound for San Antonio had accelerated to 115 mph when a Gulfstream jet strayed in front of it while landing Saturday, forcing the SkyWest pilot to slam on his brakes, The Los Angeles Times reported.

The SkyWest jet shuddered to a stop 100 feet from the smaller craft, the Times said. Air controllers said it was the closest they had seen two planes come to each other without colliding.

A tower controller apologized to the SkyWest pilot and said the Gulfstream had crossed without a clearance, the Times report said.
