Strong earthquake shakes central Mexico

MEXICO CITY, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- A strong earthquake rattled central Mexico early Friday.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake measured a 5.9 magnitude, large enough to do significant damage in built-up areas within 50 miles of the epicenter. The earthquake hit at 9:30 a.m. local time.

In Mexico City, the quake rattled buildings and set some skyscrapers swaying, EITB reported. But there were no reports of significant injuries or damage in the capital.

The epicenter was in a mountainous area in the state of Guerrero, about 130 miles west southwest of Mexico City and 45 miles west northwest of Arcelia.
