Colombians attack along Panamanian border

BOGOTA, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- An increasing number of Colombians are fleeing the unrest occurring near the country's border with Panama, the United Nations said in a statement Thursday.

Up to 14 plantation workers were killed in late July by what the U.N. High Commission for Refugees called an "irregular army," which has threatened the livelihood of the poor farmers and laborers living there.

Many of those living in the area have reportedly fled the area and are afraid to return.

The UNHCR said there are an estimated 2.5 million internally displaced people in Colombia.
