Israel pressured to supply power to Gaza

JERUSALEM, July 3 (UPI) -- There is international pressure on Israel to supply power to replace the electricity from a Gaza transformer station bombed last week, a report says.

Ha'aretz, citing government sources, said officials from the United States, Britain and other countries have been putting a lot of pressure on the Israeli government. The transformer station supplied about half of Gaza's power, and the air strike deprived 860,000 people of electricity.

Much of Gaza's power supply already comes from Israel. At Sunday's cabinet meeting, Infrastructure Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer reported on choices for increasing that amount.

The transformer station is jointly owned by a U.S. investment company and a Palestinian entrepreneur.

Israel says its troops invaded Gaza to rescue a kidnapped 19-year-old soldier.
