AURORA, Ill., June 4 (UPI) -- Two women in Aurora, Ill., were hospitalized after being attacked by two pit bulls, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Joan Ware, 44, was treated and released Saturday with 25 stitches on her legs. Her friend Katrina Harden, 33, received 5 stitches on her left arm.

The two women were walking home from a neighbor's house when the two dogs appeared and began biting and scratching them.

Police shot one of the dogs upon arriving at the scene. The other escaped.

No one has come forward to claim ownership of the dogs, which did not have collars or tags.

The Aurora City Council put some restrictions on vicious animals in 2000, but pit bulls were not banned. Chicago also does not ban pit bulls, although a ban has been discussed following recent dog-fighting incidents.
