Serbian PM: Mladic arrest is top priority

BELGRADE, Serbia, May 10 (UPI) -- Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica says his top priority is to arrest accused war criminal Ratko Mladic.

Kostunica said Wednesday he is working "intensively" on the search for the Bosnian Serb military leader, sought by The Hague tribunal on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity in the former Yugoslavia from 1991-95.

Mladic is charged with responsibility for the July 1995 massacre of 8,000 Muslim Bosnian men and boys in Srebrenica, and a 3-year siege and shelling of the Bosnia-Herzegovina capital Sarajevo.

"Above all, in the interest of Serbia is to complete cooperation with The Hague tribunal," Kostunica told the state-controlled Serbian radio-television. "One of top priorities of the Serbian government is our accession to the European Union."

The EU last week called off association talks with Serbia-Montenegro to protest Kostunica's failure to keep his promise to hand over Mladic to the tribunal by April 30.

Belgrade police overnight arrested a retired Serbian army sergeant on suspicion he was helping Mladic. Blagoje Govedarica was the 11th person, mostly military personnel, to be detained for allegedly helping Mladic evade arrest.
