China shuts down six Internet porn sites

BEIJING, April 30 (UPI) -- Internet authorities in Beijing have shut down six pornographic Web sites because of what the Chinese government called "unhealthy content."

Operators of two additional Web sites have been given a deadline to clean up their content or face shutdown, China's news agency Xinhua reported Sunday.

The government kicked off a massive campaign to weed out pornography in 2004. Last year, 11 people were jailed for up to 12 years for running an obscene Web site.

China has more than 100 million Internet users and some 700,000 Web sites, with an estimated 25,000 being added each year.
