Japanese WW II veteran surfaces in Ukraine

TOKYO, April 17 (UPI) -- A Japanese veteran of World War II who vanished in eastern Russia after the war has been found alive and living in Ukraine.

Kyodo News Service reports that Ishinosuke Uwano, now 83, was known to be in Sakhalin, on the Pacific coast of the old Soviet Union after the war. He was last seen in the area in 1958.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare reported that Uwano married a Russian woman and eventually moved to Ukraine. He and his son are scheduled to arrive in Japan on Wednesday to meet relatives he has not seen for more than 60 years.
