Crucifix divides parents over joint school

LANARK, Scotland, April 7 (UPI) -- A school campus in Scotland that incorporates Glengowan Primary School and St. Mary's Primary School has outraged parents who object to religious icons.

Pupils use a common main entrance to go into a shared foyer where there are separate entrances to each school -- one to the left for St. Mary's and the other to the right for Glengowan.

A crucifix and a statue of the Virgin Mary are displayed in the central foyer, the Glasgow Herald reported.

Parents of non-Catholic children, who had been told there would be no religious symbols in the shared areas of the school, are threatening to withdraw their children from school. They are sending a petition with 200 names to North Lanarkshire Council, claiming St. Mary's school staff has turned the foyer into a chapel.

North Lanarkshire Council leader Jim McCabe insisted staff at St. Mary's had done nothing wrong and are well within their rights to have a crucifix above the school's entrance.
