Wash. county bars transgender bias

SEATTLE, March 28 (UPI) -- The King County Council in Washington State has added gender identity to its anti-discrimination law.

The ordinance passed 5-4 with all Democrats supporting it and Republicans in opposition, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports. County Executive Ron Sims is expected to sign it.

"This is just another step in bringing equal justice under law to all citizens," Councilman Dow Constantine, a Seattle Democrat, said.

Supporters say that the ordinance brings the county into line with state law, which bars discrimination against transgendered individuals in employment, housing or lending. The meeting was attended by a number of people who have changed genders who spoke of difficulties getting jobs.

Randall Leskovar, pastor of Calvary Chapel West Seattle, was the only opponent to speak, visualizing parents having no right to oppose a male kindergarten teacher coming to work in a dress and high heels.

"This is lunacy," he said.
