Parents arrested in child's 1990 murder

NEW YORK, March 23 (UPI) -- An estranged couple in California face murder charges in Long Island, N.Y., 16 years after their 4-year-old daughter was killed and buried in a shallow grave.

What had been languishing as a cold case for the Suffolk County police broke open in Sacramento Calif., when following a domestic dispute, Parmit Singh accused Khairual Abdul of killing their daughter Jennifer in 1990.

He said Abdul had shaken the child hard and thrown her to the floor, Newsday reported. Sacramento police contacted police in New York, who linked it to the discovery of a child's skeletal remains found off a Long Island highway in 1996.

Both suspects were arrested on fugitive warrants and were awaiting extradition to New York. Abdul was charged with second-degree murder and Singh with hindering prosecution in the first degree, for not alerting authorities sooner about the killing.

The child's skeleton showed signs of prior abuse, and police said the child likely was never reported missing as the parents, who are illegal immigrants, often changed their names.
