Car hits crowd, kills teacher, hurts 8

CULVER CITY, Calif., March 16 (UPI) -- A Culver City, Calif., middle school was in mourning Thursday after a teacher was killed and eight students were injured by an out-of-control car.

The group from Turning Point School was returning to class after an outing in a park when the accident happened Wednesday afternoon, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The female driver and a male passenger both fled the scene but were later arrested.

Police said the 20-year-old woman told them that she and her boyfriend had been arguing and that he grabbed the steering wheel, forcing the car onto the sidewalk.

Sgt. Brian Fitzpatrick said they were being held on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and hit-and-run with a death. Bail was set at $400,000 for each.

Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said five students required immediate care and that three others suffered lesser injuries. The name of the teacher who was killed was not released.
