Cheney tight-lipped on CIA name leak

WASHINGTON, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney says he has the power under a presidential executive order to declassify information but won't say what he's declassified.

Speaking to Fox News, Cheney made the remark after being questioned about charges of perjury and obstruction of justice against his former chief of staff, Lewis Libby.

Libby resigned after being indicted in connection with the leak of a CIA operative's identity after her husband spoke out against the administration's Iraq policy.

As to whether Libby might have learned the agent's name from Cheney, the vice president referred to his executive authority.

"I've certainly advocated declassification and participated in declassification decisions," he said, but he would not say whether he had done so in this case.

Cheney then retreated further on the charges against Libby, The Washington Post said.

"He's a great guy. I've worked with him for a long time, have enormous regard for him," Cheney said "I may well be called as a witness at some point in the case, and it's therefore inappropriate for me to comment on any facet of the case."
