Arkansas mother held in children's deaths

DEQUEEN, Ark., Jan. 30 (UPI) -- An Arkansas woman has reportedly confessed to a priest that she had smothered her three children during the weekend.

Paula Mendez, 43, collapsed Saturday when police officers arrived at her home in DeQueen after she had taken "a toxic substance," KATV, Little Rock, reported Monday.

Officers were responding to a call from the children's father in New York, who police said told them that his wife had killed their twin boy and girl and an 8-year-old.

The children were found dead in the home and their bodies were sent to the state crime lab in Little Rock for autopsies.

Mendez was hospitalized and asked to see a priest Sunday night. The Rev. Salvador Marquez-Munoz said she expressed "tremendous remorse" and asked for forgiveness, the report said.

Mendez has been transferred from the hospital to a county jail.
