Russia restores gas flow to Georgia

MOSCOW, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Russia has completed repairs to a natural gas pipeline that carries fuel to Georgia.

The pipeline was severed by bombs on Jan. 22, along with a reserve pipeline and an electricity line, the New York Times reported.

The energy shortage began during the coldest weather in Georgia in years, and worsened several days later, when wind toppled transmission lines carrying electricity generated by hydropower dams. Most of the small nation was left without heat or electricity as temperatures fell well below freezing at night.

Georgian energy minister Nika Gilauri said he expected an unbroken flow to be established by late Sunday. Once flow was stable, it would take roughly a week to fill the entire country's gas lines and restore heat to all residences, the newspaper said.
