U.N. notes Afghan election success

UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- The U.N. Security Council congratulated Afghanistan on the formal acceptance of election results that will seat a new parliament.

Although violence has been increasing in the country in recent months, as supporters of the ousted Taliban have been regrouping and changing tactics, the recent election showed progress, said Russian Ambassador Andrey Denisov, whose country holds the Security Council presidency in November.

The new parliament is to be seated in January. The election also covered provincial councils.

The Security Council statement said it was important for other countries to keep a high level of commitment for Afghanistan assistance, which still faces problems such as improving security, governance and development and fighting terrorist and narcotic threats.

Also, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres called on Afghan leaders to take into account the needs of repatriating refugees when it explains its development plans at a London conference early next year.
