Police officers kill charging pit bulls

CHICAGO, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Police officers investigating reports of a gang fight on Chicago's Southwest Side shot and killed three pit bulls that someone loosed on them.

A police spokesman said the dogs charged shortly after the officers arrived at the scene of likely gang fight Wednesday afternoon.

"Someone opened the gate to a back yard, and all the dogs bolted ... toward the police officers," the spokesman told the Chicago Tribune. "The officers were forced to put the dogs down."

A fourth dog was wounded and ran away.

It was the second attack by pit bulls on people in the Chicago-area in less than a week. A 10-year-old boy mauled by pit bulls in northwest suburban Cary, Ill., last weekend, remained in critical condition but a 10-year-old girl was upgraded to good condition, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Thursday.

The children were attacked when they knocked on the door at the home of the dog's owner.
