LONDON, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Britain is calling for a new global climate change agreement that will include three of the largest polluters -- the United States, India and China.
Prime Minister Tony Blair wrote in The Observer the current agreement, called the Kyoto Protocol, is not effective enough because it exempted China and India, classifying them as developing nations, and because the United States refused to ratify it for fear of regulations that would affect the U.S. economy.
The BBC reports Blair's call comes in advance of a major meeting Tuesday in London of the eight largest industrial nations as well as China, India, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa.
Blair cited "international politics" as a reason for a weaker current agreement and said the world needed to "face up to reality" for practical solutions to the global warming problem.
