Cheney set for surgery next week

WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Vice President Dick Cheney is scheduled to undergo surgery to treat an aneurysm in his leg, Roll Call reported Friday.

"The vice president is slated to have an elective surgical procedure to treat an aneurysm in the artery behind the right knee that was discovered earlier this year during a routine checkup," spokesman Steve Schmidt told the Capitol Hill paper.

"It is a condition that needs to be addressed so as not to become a problem over time," said Schmidt.

The spokesman would not say where the procedure would be performed. He said the surgery would involve local anesthesia and "a short hospital stay."

"The vice president will return to work shortly thereafter," Schmidt said.

The 64-year-old Cheney -- who has had four heart attacks -- had quadruple bypass surgery in 1988. He had a defibrillator implanted in his chest three years ago.
