Special Olympics honors Algerian leader

ALGIERS, Algeria, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Algerian President Abdul Aziz Bouteflika has received a Special Olympics award for his care to the mentally challenged, it was announced Sunday.

Regional director for the Special Olympics Committee for the Middle East and North Africa, Ayman Abdul Wahab, said Bouteflika was considered a "leader in social service of our mentally challenged."

He added after meeting the Algerian president that the world had noticed his activities, and that's why the Special Olympics Committee decided to "honor him with the international Olympics award."

The mentally and physically challenged around the world compete in sports events every four years in the Special Olympics, established 35 years ago.
