Gonzales fans rally Supreme Court support

WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has been mentioned as a potential nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court and supporters are now trying to rally support.

The Washington Post reports Republicans and former Gonzales aides have been coordinating a public relations campaign aimed at convincing other Republicans that Gonzales is conservative enough to sit on the bench.

President Bush has alluded to Gonzales as a potential replacement for Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and said this week he's on the list.

Some conservatives have expressed reservations about Gonzales, saying he hasn't proven his stance on issues such as abortion and affirmative action.

William Kristol, the editor of the conservative magazine Weekly Standard, said Bush needs to capitalize on an all Republican Congress and ensure the Supreme Court is truly conservative.
