Postal privatization top issue in Japan

TOKYO, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi plans to make privatizing the postal service his top issue if he has a majority after the upcoming election.

Legislation failed to pass the upper house last year. But Koizumi believes legislators will change their minds on the issue if proponents carry the day in the lower house election on Sept. 11, the Asahi Shimbun reported.

Koizumi said he will not invite conservative politicians who left his Liberal Democratic Party over postal privatization to help form a government. If voters fail to return the ruling coalition of the LDP and New Komeito Party, the prime minister said what happens will be in the hands of Komeito leaders and his successor at the LDP.

The LDP continues to enjoy a large lead in the polls as the election approaches.
