Search abandoned for crocodile victim

BRISBANE, Australia, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- The search has been abandoned for a man apparently taken by a crocodile at Cape York in northern Australia.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. reports police in Queensland said there is no hope of finding Barry Jeffries of Townsville alive.

Jeffries' wife Glenda told police she and her husband were in a canoe in Lake Placid National Park on Tuesday when the crocodile attacked. She said her husband tried to push the beast away with an oar and was grabbed by the arm.

Jeffries' shirt and shorts were found in reeds about 600 feet from the couple's campsite on Friday. A crocodile believed to be the one responsible for the attack was shot Wednesday, but police say there were no signs of human remains in its digestive system.
