Ahmadinejad vows to defeat Iran foes

TEHRAN, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- New Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad vowed before Parliament Saturday to confront any threat facing Iran and defeat its enemies.

The Iranian News Agency quoted Ahmadinejad as swearing upon the Holy Koran to defend the Iranian people and the Islamic republic's constitution, and the country's religion.

"Nothing will ever defeat the will of the Iranian people as long as its government, which is relying on such a people, will confront by all its means threats and enemies," Ahmadinejad said.

"The Iranian people is strong and can take great decision without fearing outside pressures and threats," he added, in apparent reference to Iran's determination to possess nuclear power which it says will serve peaceful objectives.

Ahmadinejad also stressed that the Shura Council, or Parliament, should be a support and partner for the government "because cooperation between the various authorities enables Iran to make great achievements."
