S.Korea pilots' strike causes huge losses

SEOUL, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- South Korea's Asiana Airlines said Wednesday that losses from the strike by its unionized pilots are snowballing having disrupted air service for 18 days.

Company officials visited the striking pilots who gathered at a resort south of Seoul to call for their return to work, but there are no immediate signs of ending the walkout.

There have been no formal talks between management and the pilots' union since Sunday.

The standstill seemed to go on for a while as the union refused the "final proposal" from the management. The management vowed not to back away from the final proposal, while striking pilots accused the management's "stubborn" stance.

Asiana Airlines said losses from the strike will reach $89.3 million this week alone should the walkout continue in this peak holiday season. The strike has cost the carrier more than $133 million so far.

The country's second-largest airline has canceled many of its domestic and international flights since pilots' union launched the walkout on July 17, calling for more pay and better working conditions.
