New religious order to take over monastery

PARIS, July 16 (UPI) -- The Vatican has granted a religious order the task of running an ancient French monastery, replacing nuns who have lived there for nearly two centuries.

As of September 2006, the 35-year-old Monastic Fraternity of Jerusalem will take control of the Trinite-de Monts monastery, founded some 500 years ago by French Kings, Le Figaro newspaper reports.

The monastery has been occupied by nuns of the Sacre-Coers order since 1828. But they say they can no longer continue running it for financial reasons.

The Fraternity is expected to carry on with the nuns' work of welcoming pilgrims and running a pre-school and a middle school.
