Israeli air force strikes rocket launcher

TEL AVIV, Israel, June 22 (UPI) -- The Israeli air force Wednesday hit Palestinian Qassam rocket launchers in the northern Gaza Strip, the army spokesman said.

The air force spotted the launchers at the edge of the Jabaliya refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip he said. They were ready for firing; the air force attacked and destroyed them, the army spokesman added.

The Haaretz newspaper's Web site quoted unnamed Palestinian sources as saying several missiles were fired at Islamic Jihad militants preparing to fire the Hamas-designed Qassams. The militants were not hurt, but the launcher was probably damaged, the report said.

Israeli Public Security Minister Gideon Ezra signaled Wednesday that Israel resumed targeted killings of Islamic Jihad militants.

He said an air strike Tuesday was "an attempt in Gaza to intercept an (Islamic Jihad) activist," Haaretz noted.

The army radio station, Galei Tsahal, said the strike had been a failed attempt to kill "a terror activist" in Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip. The radio quoted the military chief of the general staff as saying Israel's policy of targeted killings has not changed, though recently it had not been used.
