S.Korea's Roh braces for summit with Bush

SEOUL, June 6 (UPI) -- South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun Monday vowed to find a way to resolve North Korea's nuclear drive when he meets his U.S. counterpart this week.

Roh is to meet President George Bush Friday over a working lunch, where the two leaders will discuss ways to bring North Korea back to international talks on its nuclear weapons programs.

In a Memorial Day speech commemorating the country's war dead, Roh also said South Korea would use high-level talks with North Korea scheduled for this month to induce Pyongyang into dialogue. The two Koreas plan to resume Cabinet-level talks for June 21-24 after a year's hiatus.

"Through this kind of effort, I will do my best to ease public concerns by resolving the North's nuclear problem peacefully," Roh said

The pledge comes amid reports that Washington is considering taking the North Korean issue to the U.N. Security Council to discuss possible penalties against the North, including economic sanctions.
