Colombia: Volcano heats up say scientists

BOGOTA, May 24 (UPI) -- Colombian officials Tuesday ordered 9,000 residents living near an active volcano to leave the area for fear of an eruption.

Scientists said the Galeras volcano on the Colombia-Ecuador border is showing signs of seismic activity and might soon erupt, El Tiempo newspaper reported Tuesday in its online edition.

Some residents, however, are refusing the leave the area saying they don't believe the volcano will erupt.

A minor eruption occurred at Galeras earlier this year, but no injuries occurred.

Meanwhile, another volcano has erupted in western Mexico spewing hot ash and lava in the largest eruption for that cone in six years.

The volcano erupted Monday in the western Mexican state of Colima, some 300 miles from Mexico City, Once T.V. reported Tuesday.
