RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, May 19 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark says ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and his top aides are not getting a fair trial.
Clark, a member of the committee for defending Saddam, was quoted Thursday in the Saudi daily al-Watan as calling the special court set up to handle Saddam's case "illegitimate and non-human." He noted Saddam was prevented from defending himself, a privilege usually allotted under international law.
Saddam appeared once before the special court in charge of trying him on accusations of genocide and mass killings.
Clark also lashed out at the Bush administration, accusing it of committing "the ugliest crimes against humanity in Iraq."
"These crimes include attacking a sovereign state, ousting its regime and killing thousands of Iraqis by bombarding their cities with internationally-banned weapons," he added.
The committee for defending Saddam and his aides comprises lawyers from several countries around the world.
