Cyprus criticizes U.S. congressmen

NICOSIA, Cyprus, May 13 (UPI) -- A U.S. congressional visit to Turkish-occupied Northern Cyprus would breach international law and U.N. resolutions, the Cyprus government said Friday.

A congressional delegation headed by two Democrats, Robert Wexler of Florida and Wayne Edward Whitefield from Kentucky, is to visit Turkey from June 1 and will afterward travel to the occupied part of Cyprus via Ercan airport.

This will be the first U.S. congressional delegation visiting Cyprus through the occupied areas. The delegation members are members of the ''Friends of Turkey Group'' in the U.S. Congress.

Cyprus government spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said landing at the illegal Ercan airport in occupied Tymbou would constitute an illegal action and a violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions on Cyprus and particularly Resolution 550 of 1984.

Northern Cyprus has been occupied by Turkish forces since 1974, but Greek Cypriots last year rejected a U.N.-brokered deal in a referendum.
