Wendy's plans Frosty giveaway weekend

DUBLIN, Ohio, May 10 (UPI) -- Dublin, Ohio-based, Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers fast-food chain announced Tuesday it will give away free Frosty frozen desserts from Friday to Sunday.

Officials said the promotion is a "thank you" to customers who supported the burger chain after an incident in San Jose, Calif., where a woman allegedly planted a severed finger in a bowl of chili.

The announcement said the company expects to give away 14 million Junior Frostys during the event, CNN Money reported. No additional purchase will be required.

"Our customers stood by us while we defended our good name and protected our employees' livelihoods, so now we're showing our appreciation with free Frostys," Tom Mueller, Wendy's chief executive, said in a news release. "We're moving on."

Las Vegas resident Anna Ayala claimed in March to have found the finger in her bowl of Wendy's chili. Police have since charged Ayala with attempted grand theft. The burger chain estimated sales for some stores decreased as much as 2.5 percent after the incident.
