Soong arrives in Beijing

BEIJING, May 10 (UPI) -- The head of Taiwan's second opposition party, James Soong, arrived in Beijing Tuesday ahead of a meeting with Chinese president Hu Jintao.

State-controlled China Radio International reported Hu Jintao saying he is looking forward to meeting with Soong Thursday.

Hu said: "Both we and Mr. Soong insist on the one-China Principle, keeping to the 1992 Consensus and opposing Taiwan Independence. That's the political basis for communications between our two parties."

"Based on this, we can promote communications across the strait through dialogue and discussion," Hu added.

In late April Hu met with the leader of Taiwan's largest opposition party, the chairman of Kuomintang, Lien Chan.

China refuses to acknowledge the legitimacy of Taiwan's democratically elected president Chen Shui-bian until he agrees to Beijing's terms for dialog.

Soong, chairman of Taiwan's People First Party, is said to be carrying a message from Taiwan's president.

Beijing is the fifth and final leg of Soong's trip to the mainland after visiting Xian, Nanjing, Shanghai and Changsha. He returns to Taiwan Friday.
