Postal votes suggest danger for Labor

LONDON, May 4 (UPI) -- Postal votes received ahead of Britain's general election Thurday suggest Labor could lose several key marginal seats, a Labor adviser says.

Party workers have been allowed to watch election officials checking the validity of postal votes already received. One Labor special adviser told the BBC the number of postal votes so far suggests the party is in danger of losing several key constituencies.

Meanwhile, a Populus tracker poll for the Times of London gave Labor a 14 percent lead with the support of 41 percent of the electorate, against 27 percent for the Conservatives and 23 percent for the Liberal Democrats. The poll sampled 1,400 and has a 2 point margin of error.

This is the worst showing for the Conservatives so far but the party insists the picture is different in key marginal seats.

Labor agrees with this claim and has warned voters against staying home, saying the result of the election is not a foregone conclusion.

A YouGov poll for Sky News gives Labor only a narrow lead, of 36 percent against 32 percent for the Conservatives and 25 percent for the Liberal Democrats. The poll sampled 2,368 people and has a 2 point margin of error.
