Mitch Albom resumes writing sports column

DETROIT, April 24 (UPI) -- Noted Detroit Free Press columnist Mitch Albom, suspended without pay for describing something that did not happen, is going back to work.

Albom is also the author of the best-sellers "Tuesdays With Morrie" and "The Five People You Meet in Heaven."

In a letter to readers published Saturday on the Free Press front page, publisher and editor Carole Leigh Hutton said Albom and four other employees involved in publication of the April 3 column are being appropriately disciplined.

Hutton cited a number of factors, including Album's "20 stellar years with the Free Press."

Albom wrote the column for the April 3 paper on an April 2 game between Michigan State and the University of North Carolina. He interviewed two former Michigan State players who told him they were planning to attend the game. He then wrote as if they had actually been there -- although they did not, in fact, attend.

The column was in a section of the Sunday paper printed before the game.
