Alleged spy returned because Cuba agreed

MIAMI, April 21 (UPI) -- Federal officials say they deported a suspected Cuban spy to Havana from Miami because the Fidel Castro regime agreed to it.

It was the first such deportation to Cuba since Castro gained power, The Miami Herald reported Thursday.

Cuba has in the past refused to take back exiles, but in the case of Juan Emilio Aboy, it unexpectedly sent a diplomatic note agreeing to accept him.

Aboy was flown back to Cuba Tuesday on a government plane.

"He was bound by hand and foot, like the criminal that he is," said an official who declined to be identified. "He had a final order of deportation, and good riddance."

Aboy is accused, but not formally charged, of being a member of the Wasp Network, a spy organization that was broken up in the 1990s.

Before his deportation he had gone on a 37-day hunger strike, and there was speculation that might have convinced the Cuban government to accept him.
