Taiwan warns politician on China trip

TAIPEI, Taiwan, April 16 (UPI) -- Taiwan's premier has warned the head of the Chinese Nationalist Party not to try to negotiate with Beijing when he visits China.

Premier Frank Hsieh's caution reflects worries that KMT Chairman Lien Chan may break Taiwanese law by appearing to represent the island nation's government in talks with Hu Jintao, China's president, the Taipei Times reported.

The premier said such activity could result in Lien's facing prosecution when he returns.

"If Lien's trip to China is simply for sightseeing purposes, he would be more than welcome to go anywhere to do whatever he wants to do without any authorization," he said.

"However, if he wishes to represent Taiwan and come up with any agreements with Chinese officials, I hope that he would talk to us before he does."

The KMT says Lien's trip to China will be made no later than May 1.
