Czech president suggests new elections

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, April 15 (UPI) -- Czech President Vaclav Klaus said Friday early parliamentary elections may be the only way to resolve the country's on-going political crisis.

Klaus's comments came after talks aimed at recreating the three-party coalition government with a new prime minister collapsed late Thursday.

Klaus said he would canvass opinions from the leaderships of the three parties to see whether there was any way they could now form a government together.

If the answer is no, he said, the president will initiate talks on holding fresh elections.

The Czech government is led by the Social Democratic Party which governs in coalition with the Freedom Union and the Christian Democrats.

The current political crisis in the Czech Republic arose amid allegations Prime Minister Stanislav Gross had acted improperly in financing the purchase of a luxury apartment in Prague.

Gross denies any wrong doing but offered to resign in favor of a new premier to resolve the crisis.
