Tories unveil election manifesto

LONDON, April 11 (UPI) -- British Conservative Leader Michael Howard has unveiled his election manifesto, which he says reflects the "simple longings" of the British people.

Presenting a "slimmed-down" manifesto, with no traditional photograph of the leader on the cover, Howard said: "On the cover are the simple longings of the British people - people who feel forgotten and ignored. They don't ask for much."

If voted into power May 5, he said the Conservative Party would meet those needs with six pledges -- cleaner hospitals, additional police officers, school discipline, controlled immigration, lower taxes and accountability.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair attacked Tory spending plans as being "fundamentally flawed."

Speaking as he unveiled Labor's economy pledges, Blair said there was a $28.3 billion shortfall in the Conservative plans. And that, he said, means they would not be able to deliver on their promises.

Accusing them of touting a "fraudulent prospectus," Blair said the Conservative plan to spend more, tax less and borrow less was "economic nonsense."

Liberal Democrat Leader Charles Kennedy said the Tories were engaged in "fantasy economics."

The Lib Dems delayed publication of their manifesto when Kennedy's pregnant wife was hospitalized.
