6-year-old girl killed by family pit bulls

HAMTRAMCK, Mich., April 4 (UPI) -- A 6-year-old girl in Hamtramck, Mich., was killed Monday by her family's two pit bulls, which were then shot and killed by police.

The animals apparently broke loose from their restraints and attacked the girl as the family was in the process of moving to a house one block away, WDIV-TV, Detroit, reported.

Witnesses reported hearing the screams of the girl and her mother being drowned out by the dogs' barking, soon followed by police gunshots after the dogs lunged at officers responding to the scene.
