Fired minister sues government

LAGOS, Nigeria, March 25 (UPI) -- The education minister of Nigeria, fired this week on corruption charges, has sued the government, saying he has been made a scapegoat, reports the BBC.

Fabian Osuji, who was dismissed Tuesday by President Olusegun Obasanjo, denied the charges and claimed the action violated his human rights.

Obasanjo, who has vowed to clean up corruption in the oil-rich African nation, alleged on television that parliament members were paid $400,000 in bribes to help pass Osuji's inflated education budget.

Obasanjo, who alleged 14 people were involved in the scandal, told the nation the parliament cannot wallow in corruption and at the same time expect the outside world to help Nigeria reduce its foreign debt of $35 billion.

Both houses of the national assembly condemned Obasanjo for conducting a "television trial."
