Unemployment in Mexico despite job growth

MEXICO CITY, March 17 (UPI) -- The Mexican labor secretary said the country's employment index is recuperating but that unemployment persists, El Universal reported Thursday.

"As long as some people lack employment opportunities in Mexico, we have not resolved the problem," Labor Secretary Carlos Abascal Carranza told reporters. The current state of the economy is not creating necessary conditions to satisfy the entire demand for jobs, he added.

The unemployment rate should fall around 2.5 to 3 percent this year, he said.

"We have to create conditions for jobs for all, when we speak of unemployment rates even though these rates are very low for Latin America, we cannot feel satisfied because the unemployment rates hide human faces, hopes and dreams," Abascal Carranza said.

He noted that the current political climate, and especially the conflicts within his party, the National Action Party, should not impede the government to continue working to advance structural reforms, particularly labor reforms in Congress.
