Boston archdiocese, insurer reach deal

BOSTON, March 8 (UPI) -- The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston says it reached an agreement with a former insurer involving funds to be paid in settlements with clergy abuse victims.

In a release posted on its Web site Monday, the archdiocese said the settlement was with Lumbermans Mutual Casualty Co. Archdiocesan officials sued the insurance company in federal court a year ago, shortly after settlements were reached in 541 sexual abuse claims. The case was dismissed but the archdiocese is still negotiating with another carrier.

The archdiocese release did not disclose financial terms of the settlement.

The archdiocese has agreed to pay people who have alleged sexual abuse by clergy a total of $85 million.

Archdiocese officials filed court documents saying Lumbermans, once the Boston archdiocese's only insurer, should pay $59.3 million to help cover the settlement. The archdiocese claims another $7.7 million should be covered by Lumbermans and another insurance company, which both covered the archdiocese for a time.
