Illinois plants settle Clean Air Act case

CHICAGO, March 7 (UPI) -- The Illinois Power Co. and its successor, Dynergy Midwest Generation, have settled a major Clean Air Act case, federal and state officials said Monday.

The U.S. Justice Department and the Environmental Protection Agency said the agreement will reduce emissions of harmful sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from Illinois five coal-fired power plants by 54,000 tons annually by installation of approximately $500 million worth of pollution control equipment and other measures.

The five plants involved in the settlement are the Baldwin Generating Station in Baldwin, the Havana Generating Station in Havana, Hennepin Generating Station in Hennepin, Vermilion Generating Station in Oakwood, and the Wood River Generating Station in Alton.

In addition, Dynergy Midwest Generation will pay a $9 million civil penalty and spend $15 million to mitigate the harm caused by unlawful emissions, the department said.

The settlement marks the largest civil penalty involving a power plant emissions case, the department said.
