Afghan elections to be postponed

KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Afghanistan's first parliamentary elections will be delayed due to security and logistical problems, the United Nations has announced.

The first post-Taliban parliamentary elections were planned to take place by May 21. Under Afghanistan's new constitution, elections must be announced 90 days before they are to take place, so time has already run out for a May 21 election.

President Hamid Karzai had delayed announcing the elections due to security and logistical concerns, the BBC reported.

According to the Pakistani Daily Star, Afghan authorities are still trying to decide what kind of voting system to use and how to determine boundaries for district parliamentary seats. Analysts have said the elections could be delayed until autumn.

Karzai is expected to announce the election date within a few days.

The presidential poll took place in October 2004, bringing Karzai a landslide victory. Arrangements for the parliamentary elections are more complex, however, especially as officials want the system to allow political parties to compete effectively with warlords.
