British soldiers convicted of Iraq abuse

OSNABRUECK, Germany, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Two British soldiers have been found guilty of abusing Iraqi prisoners during 2003 at Camp Bread Basket in Basra, the BBC reported Wednesday.

Daniel Kenyon was convicted of three charges and Mark Cooley of two. A third soldier, Darren Larkin, pleaded guilty to assault charges and will be sentenced Friday with Kenyon and Cooley. Larkin faces up to six months, while Kenyon and Cooley face two-year prison terms.

\ The military panel in Osnabrueck, Germany, found Cooley guilty of disgraceful conduct of a cruel kind after pictures emerged showing him driving a forklift truck with a bound Iraqi suspended from the prongs. He was also convicted of simulating a punch in another photograph.

Kenyon, the most senior soldier on trial, was convicted of two counts of failing to report the actions of soldiers under his command. He was also convicted of aiding and abetting Larkin to assault a prisoner.

Larkin pleaded guilty to assault after he was pictured standing on top of an Iraqi.
