Sen. Clinton visits troops in Iraq

CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y. and four other U.S. senators traveled to Iraq during the weekend to get a sense of the war's situation on the ground.

She had lunch Sunday with Marine reserves during a two-hour stopover in Fallujah, the New York Daily News reported Monday.

"I'm very glad she came out here, Lance Cpl. Ilya Kaufman of Brooklyn told the newspaper. "Anyone who doesn't belong here and comes over here, I have a lot of respect for."

Lance Cpl. Walter Stokes, also from Brooklyn, said: "I told her that basically we're making progress and if we stay here long enough we'll get the job done. But if we just do a slapdash job, I'm not sure how long it will last."

Along those lines, Clinton told the Daily News it would be a "mistake" for U.S. troops to leave Iraq too soon and setting a deadline would give a "green light to terrorists to just wait us out."

Clinton was joined on the trip by Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine; Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis.; Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.; and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
