China sends delegation to North Korea

BEIJING, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- China is sending an envoy to North Korea to coax Pyongyang into rejoining six-nation talks aimed at ending a standoff over the North's nuclear arsenal.

Wang Jiarui, head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, will lead a delegation this weekend to Pyongyang, which invited the Chinese officials for talks, the China Daily said Friday.

North Korea acknowledged last week it possessed nuclear weapons and was pulling out of six-party talks over those weapons, discussions that include China, the United States, the Republic of Korea, Russia and Japan.

Since North Korea's acknowledgement of its nuclear weapons, representatives of the United States, South Korea and China have talked in Beijing about how to respond.
