Republicans to turn up the heat on Reid

WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- National Republicans are expected to begin a prolonged campaign against Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to weaken his support in his home state.

The Republican National Committee will kick off the campaign by sending a 13-page mailer to roughly 1 million Nevadans explaining how Reid obstructs the president's agenda, Roll Call said Monday.

"This is the initial salvo in the upcoming discussion," RNC Communications Director Brian Jones said.

RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman has already done a series of radio interviews criticizing Reid, while other events, including a gathering of Nevada medical professionals to protest Reid's stance on medical malpractice reform, are reportedly being planned.

Reid spokesman Jim Manley dismissed the RNC offensive as "the same old, same old," adding the senator will not be easily demonized.

"He has repeatedly stated his willingness to work with Republicans to pass a common- sense agenda, and so far that has fallen on deaf ears," Manley added.

Many of the tactics the RNC plans to use where first implemented against Daschle. "This is the Daschle-ization of Reid," said one Republican strategist. "We are going to chip away day by day."
