Libya official paper blasts Saudi

TRIPOLI, Libya, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Libya's official al-Jamahiriya newspaper Friday blasted Saudi Arabia, calling it the "kingdom of obscurity that is living in dark ages."

"How many ages and centuries does it need to reach the 21st century," the paper asked in a front page editorial.

It said the Saudi regime "could be the best representative of the pre-Middle Ages era and a reflection of the cave ages."

"At a time the world is preparing for the new century with all its challenges and realities, the kingdom of obscurity is still living in dark ages ruled with a mentality that belongs to the past by rulers who are sick and half dead," the paper added.

It accused the ruling al-Saud dynasty of treating Saudi nationals as third class citizens.

Saudi Arabia recalled its ambassador to Tripoli and evicted the Libyan envoy in Riyadh earlier this week to protest against an alleged Libyan conspiracy to assassinate Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah.
